If you select an orange magic spell (seemingly any) and click friendly, your cursor is still that spell. Selecting that spell will fire it, even though you look friendly to everyone.

Step one: grab an orange mage and another critter

Step two: select any orange magic spell

Step three: switch to friendly (either f button or click it) and cast on your friend.
