If you try to put a firestarting kit in the furnace, it will tell you you need wood in it first, and then start a fire anyway. If you then try to cover it up with clay, it'll say you need burning wood in the furnace, even though the fire's already lit. If you add a log, it'll update, and then you can put clay on it and make charcoal normally.
