This may apply to all furniture, but I set down two tin inkwells, and for fun I decided to lock them both, only for one to vanish when I picked it up. I haven't repeated or tested it with any other furniture, but I'd assume it might apply to other more expensive furniture.

Step one: obtain multiple of the (same?) Furniture item and lock them in the same place

Step two: unlock them and only find one there
