I attempted to apply a "needle and thread" trim on a tabard twice, once in raven black and once in periwinkle on a dark blue tabard. I have not tested with other things to trim, but this consumed both the dye and applicate kit. I haven't attempted it on another piece of clothing or with another symbol, since I don't want to consume the rest of my applicate kits.
