Eight years ago, a band of pirates landed on Kalris and ran amok. Now they're back with their crew.

This event is scheduled to begin September 12th at 8pm EDT/12am UTC.

Hello everyone, and welcome back! This event is going to be the sequel to the previous event, Pirates Ashore, which ran in 2024. You can read the details about it there, but the gist of it is this: A group of four pirates, essentially a scouting party from the ship, landed on Kalris and ran around robbing people and beating them up. Despite suffering early defeats at the hands of the rallied Morenth defense, they used stealth and cunning to get around the guards and attack the undefended civilians, including kidnapping one.

After taking this hostage back to the forest with them, the locals discovered the disappearance and sent scouts out to find out more. They were all ambushed and defeated and also kidnapped. Faced with a growing hostage situation and pressured with threats of violence, the people of Morenth decided that the safety of the prisoners was the most important and paid a handsome ransom to the pirates for their safe return. The pirates then left, taking this ransom and returning to their ship.

For a long time, nothing more came of this, but A Pirate Never Forgets! Soon, the Dread Captain Longwhiskers will be seeking more of the riches that his crew members found on Kalris nearly eight years ago, and returning with his whole ship to stake a claim on the land beyond the Torrus Foothills. He and his crew intend not just to hassle the local inhabitants, but to drop anchor and establish a settlement of scofflaws and brigands, and to bring those living here to heel at least long enough to extract the score he's been dreaming of his entire life.

Naturally, most people of Kalris are likely to take issue with this. But what can they do about it? Captain Longwhiskers' reputation as a duelist par none is well-earned, and if that weren't bad enough, he has a whole crew of nasty critters to back him up. It doesn't seem like a quick ejection is on the books, but no one is invincible. He must have some weakness that can be used to drive him off or scatter his band. We all just might have to put up with him and his merry band for a while while we try to figure out what that is. In the meantime, at least they brought rum?

Event Play Guidelines

This will not be a purely combat-focused event, and the pirates are not here primarily to rob players; they might shake people down for valuables to wager each other in dice games, and it's likely they'll muscle local establishments for protection rackets or to force them to accept the presence of pirates in them. Players should be prepared for this and ready to employ guards or not play during event hours if they wish to avoid this (think of the Old West town where all the buildings slam their windows shut as soon as the bandits roll through town).

However, the primary goal here will be the intermingling of pirates with player characters and the attempted bullying and intimidation of the locals into submission, as well as creating a safe haven for outlaw-type characters away from the main civilization. The pirates will have their own gathering and social space which players can freely come into without being in danger as long as they don't make trouble. Pirates may also choose to come into town and socialize with players. They will have their own supplies and unique items which players can attempt to barter for or pilfer.

Play your characters with the understanding that they are unlikely to resolve the situation immediately and setbacks should be expected. People who choose to play during the event times should try to adapt to the circumstances. The main antagonist will be working towards his own goal as a "lose condition" which can end the event if players are unable to put up enough resistance.

This event will have more of a goofy tone than The Enchantress, but the same advice I gave previously still applies: Interact directly with the event characters even if you don't like them. People who do this, I think, will have fun. The event characters are there to help you have fun. People who avoid them and do stuff around them maybe won't have so much fun, because you will have to create your own fun. Don't take too seriously the advice you're likely to receive to avoid the situation for your own safety. New characters have little to nothing to steal and are in no danger. The pirates will make it immediately clear if they are coming around to pick fights and steal things versus to be boisterous and loud.

Have fun!

Quarrel

The first day of the event was very fun for me. I liked seeing the dynamic between the crew, and it seemed like each event character was really their own being after an hour or two. Quarrel spent most of their time with the rowdy youngsters at the bar doing what they normally do when there's a change in the wind, since things were winding down by the time they got involved.

(As an aside, one of my favorite things to do with Quarrel is have them freak out bystanders by prickling Big Threats just a little. The immediate "YOU DID NOT" reaction of horror from Twig the Very Little Scrounger/Crafter Who Dumped All Fort will never get old.)

I was a bit curious by them seemingly not knowing of the Pantheon or much of Kalris? I could be missing something, since I wasn't involved in the prior pirate event and the ones they mostly talked to were not either, but I was under the impression that the pirates spend quite a bit of time on/around Kalris itself? I did have Quarrel back off of prying a bit at one point since I felt that the characters I was interacting with were being pushed a touch too far from their script and weren't too sure how to respond. Which is, of course, totally fine and completely understandable considering the short prep time and late hours at which it occurred.

I do have some concerns about the ratio of players to event characters. Obviously they're meant to be a long-standing threat, but I found very few characters who were active, and I do not think there are enough combat characters to even fight them. Combat isn't the only solution, or maybe not even one, but I really don't see any large scale battles happening at this point logistically. And, I worry about there only being a few characters with substantial wealth to plunder during the event. Though there seems to be other goals besides stealing with the whole tavern and outlaw outpost.

Cinna

Cinna did not directly brush up with the pirates much yet, but I'm already heavily enjoying the vibe of immediate panicked rumors spreading.

Cinna will either be the savior of the townies or drink her own poison again

I'm not too concerned about numbers. I'm excited to stress test my attempt at a combat build regardless of the outcome!  I don't know if we'll end up seeing a united front against the pirates at this stage (and given our past attempts against the vampire I have my doubts lol) but I am aware of several combat capable critters if not necessarily combat ready lol.  Hopefully folks who have been wanting to explore their combat builds or try out new ones will have a chance to shine here.

I also have a feeling the non combative characters will have to be creative about their resistance and I'm excited for potential RP heavy solutions.

Harris

Harris will be journaling about the event!  (will be bundled in with whatever he gets up to before next Saturday)

Harris also had a fairly brief encounter with the pirates but falling into the familiar Buddy System, don't let friends walk alone mindset is fun to RP. Very silly for Harris to be completely on edge on moment and then cheerfully pointing out a flower or some random detail the next.

The pirates he talked to were very fun and full of life, excited for him to meet more of them.

Azalev

Annnnd now an excuse to stop neglecting my silly badger haha. Absolutely kicking my feet and giggling about the burrow location.

Very curious how things will develop between them and the pirates.

Vague

Vague was mostly scrounging the entire time. Those she did see, it was really too much of an effort and she considered it would be too weird to be all up in a group's space to check out what was going on. The one character that did see and try to chase her caught her at a bad time of 'needing to put things away', but she was kind and amused enough to double back and point out a firemelon patch for them on the way back to her burrow. How that was taken, she does not for her mission was more important at the moment.

Eyas

Eyas met the pirates before even leaving their burrow, which was really funny but certainly not for them. They don’t have visitors often, so having armed strangers suddenly flood into their burrow and ask questions (all while being cornered in a small room with no other exit) was quite alarming.

They also believe the pirates broke one of their doors, which I likely just left open while going into the other room to grab stuff but couldn't confirm due to their limited view in there. Whether it happened or not, Eyas is pretty sure it did, so enjoy the possible bit of misinformation on their part haha. That ended up being the thing that pushed them to action, since otherwise they'd probably just lock the entrance and wait it out.

Since the pirates seemed to need directions, Eyas took their chance to get to other critters first, with the intention of warning the priest and several establishment owners, as the pirates were looking for places of interest. Their main concern was that it could be some kind of a raid. They didn't end up meeting any of the critters they wanted to warn, but were lucky to meet several others in one place, where they ended up staying until things calmed down.

After seeing the pirates non-violently communicate with others, as well as being led somewhere by the priest, Eyas started to second-guess themself and slightly let their guard down in the following days, especially since their own encounter was also non-violent and nothing was taken (it did spook them though). The snows arrived, so there were other things to worry about. And then someone mentioned pirates. Now they’ll probably freeze up if they end up in their presence again, though they’re also a curious critter. Having pirates right nextdoor will certainly be an adjustment.

The first day was a lot of fun, and the event characters were really engaging! Also, I really liked their character descriptions. They're vivid but to the point, which is very helpful in the flow of roleplay.

Harris

Give it up for week 2!

Didn't budget much time for Harris this playtest unfortunately but he was at least on the VERY periphery.

He now has a reason to potentially seek them out next week at least. :3c

I have a feeling he may become more involved as he catches up with others about their own interactions throughout the week.  And it has been amusing for me to hear him mentioned by the pirates in passing.

Cinna

Cinna's done a bit of scouting, just simmering, not majorly changing her routine just yet.

She has once again interacted moreso with characters in the aftermath of their altercations with the pirates though, so the vibe of "just not on MY lawn" is very high right now

Azalev

Azalev, Azalev... Oh boy.

I have a feeling they are teetering on the edge of either being pretty Useful to the pirates or really ticking them off. (Why not both?  They have two paws.. <3)

I had considered logging into another character to let them have their first encounter but once they dropped past tipsy into drunk I decided to just play it out haha.

Their interactions with Dredge in particular were especially amusing to me.

They definitely have a thread to follow up on and are unfortunately settling in as a regular customer it seems.

Voltaire

Also a belated Voltaire visited the tavern in week one. Just some cordial observation.  Mostly just popcorn viewing for me, since they didn't have much to offer the pirates haha.

Although I do have a few ideas if they do end up stopping by again.
